PORCUPINE TREE The Incident
|
Roadrunner Records Rating: 10 Out Of 10 Reviewed by: Bam-Bam
Although I’m a HUGE fan of this band, I’m not very big on conceptual albums where the band creates one, 55-minute song that has like 15 pieces to it and then calls it “one track”. Give me a break. While The Incident is a 2-cd set, the first disc being that “one track” called “The Incident”, there are fourteen tracks that make up this “one track” and I fail to see how this constitutes one, epic, 55-minute song except in the eyes of the artist. Again, this is just a personal pet-peeve of mine and not something that can possibly take away from the music contained herein because it is incredibly GREAT! The big difference between PORCUPINE TREE and the QUEENSRYCHE, DREAM THEATER and RUSH conceptual albums is that the singer is so friggin amazing. He sounds like OASIS’s Liam & Noel Gallagher in the melodic delivery that he always packs into each track. That’s pretty much a far cry from all the other Prog-Metal/Rock bands out there who try to make everything sound so operatic and “perfect”. Vocalist Steve Wilson is not only a poet, but a very brilliant singer who sounds every bit as relevant as the BREAKING BENJAMIN and TOOL tracks that are being played on Active Rock radio, but his delivery is so unique and flavorful that he stands light-years apart from all the other bands that he might find himself lumped in with.
After all my bitching had subsided about the 55-minute track with 14-pieces to it, I really warmed up to the first disc, “The Incident” and was mesmerized by all the facets it uncovered for the listener. My favorite “parts” were “ii-The Blind House”, “v-Drawing The Line” and “xi-Octane Twisted”. The whole thing just rolls beautifully through the speakers with nary a care about the timing because that 55-minutes rolls by very fast while you’re caught up in their lucent, melodic-woven trance. CD #2 is four tracks that are highlighted by the brilliant “Flicker” and “Remember Me Lover”. Truly an enjoyable listen even after the fourth full spin of both CD’s, so that tells me a lot about this band’s staying power. Fans of the band will rank this their favorite over any of the previous flashes of brilliance and those who don’t know the name will never forget this record. Ranks amongst my Top 10 Favorite Epic Concept Records Of All Time!!!
Head over to (HERE) and pick up the entire effort for less than 10-bucks!!! A steal in every part of the world! Very, Very Highly Recommended!!!
